Pompano Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing the past month has really been really good to fantastic. The Mahi have been out in force, and kingfish bite has been fantastic. We have also had a really good wahoo bite right after the full moon. The only fishing that has been ok has been the swordfish bite.

Let's start with the mahi (dolphin) fishing. The past month the seas have been pretty calm. With calm seas the sargasso weed tends to form into nice weedlines and big patches. All the weed has been holding large amounts of baitfish wich in turn attracts the mahi. We have caught our limit or close to it on every trip. With that said some days we have to work for them as some of the mahi have been under size. We tend to go from school to school until we find the bigger fish. Most of the mahi have been in the 3-6lb class. We have caught a few small gaffers in the mix wich are usually 10lbs and bigger.

The kingfish bite has been off the charts. Most of our charters start out fishing for kingfish in the morning. We have caught our limit of two per person usually within a couple of hours and then head offshore for mahi. The kingfish have not been huge, but most of the kingfish have been averaging between 8-15lbs.

The wahoo fishing this year has been fairly slow until the full moon in August. The wahoo bite really turned on right after the full moon. There were wahoo caught up to 72lbs. We have not been specifically targeting them, but did manage to catch two while fishing for kingfish.
Swordfishing has been hit or miss. Some boats catching swords and some not. We only had one swordfish charter and managed to catch one. The swordfish was undersized so it was tagged and released. From September thru December is usually the prime migration for big swordfish thru our waters off of South Florida.
I am currently booked up thru August as everyone wants to head offshore and catch mahi. I have plenty of dates still open in September. Expect for last year we have had a very good mahi bite that lasted thru October. So give me a call or send me an email while the awesome mahi bite is still going on.
Catch Em Up,
