Shark Fishing Cocoa Beach

Capt. Chris Cameron
November 23, 2014
Port Canaveral - Saltwater Fishing Report

This weeks report is a little different than the previous topics. This week will be on sharkin. The last few weeks in general have been pretty decent on the shark bite. We had many different species and a lot of them. Fishing the bait pods lately has been the key to almost every species. If you throw live bait out in the middle of the bait pod right now chances are you will catch a red drum, bluefish, Spanish and inevitably, the sharks. The trick is to target the larger ones. Yes you can catch a 50lb black-tip shark on a live pogie with mono. But your chances of consistently doing it are better if you use the right tackle. Here is what I learned over the years from some of the best guys in the port. Tackle should be pretty strong. You can catch a 25lb red drum to a 250lb sand tiger, Or bigger…. I use a bottom rod with a sealine 400, spooled by 100lb braid. I then use a large swivel with either 7 strand or solid wire in the 80/90lb class.3/4 feet of wire lead is plenty. Whatever you choose is fine. There's a few different knots you would use depending on the wire you choose. Then I use a 9/0 or a 10/0 mustad hook. Nothing special. Bait can be a variety of things. Fresh is the key. I like to use live bluefish if possible. While I'm shark fishing I have the smaller rods out to catch bait. Bluefish are usually all over the place. A sure bet is fresh bonita. You can chunck the bonita up to bite size pieces and that works great too. Ladyfish, Spanish macs and even king work great. Sharks are usually a lot shallower than you think. 15ft deep or less. Lately we have been doing well in the 25 foot range. There's many locations you can find and you can customize your shark fishing however you like. Chumming can improve your catch too. Keep it simple. Good luck
