Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

We finally had a day of good weather. I took three anglers out to a near shore reef. The seas were 1 to 2 feet. The sea water temperature was 75 degrees and we had about 30 feet visibility. I used my minkota tolling motor to keep us right on top of the spot. This reef has lots pf structure but the spots are fairly small, many times a short move of 50 to 100 feet completely changes the fishing. We were using cut squid and some barracuda strips from a previous trip. I also used a Sebeka rod to get some live bait along with grunts we caught that were used both as live bait and as cut bait. The rigs were triple hook chicken rigs with 3/0 hooks on 40 pound pink andy line the rods were ugly sticks with Penn 320 and 310 reels lined with 50# braid. I also had some Shimano TLD 15s, lever drag lines out with live bait on a float and a Shimano 2000 on an ugly stick with a single 3/0 circle hook 4 foot leader . We moved several times throughout the day. The reef is in 60 feet of water and comes up 5 to 10 feet off the bottom. The fish finer clearly showed the bait and target species on the screen. We caught a lot of very large grunts, 9 nice size Lane snapper, a nice white boned porgy, and 2 large barracudas 1 was 46" the other was 50 inches. Several times we had nice fish on the line only to have them eaten on the way up, twice we did manage to get the head of the fish up so we could see what we lost. We also had several other hits on the live and cut bait that bit off fairly quickly even with the steel leader hooks
