New experiance for couple from the MIdwest

Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

I took a couple from the Midwest out to the close reef .The weather forecast was for 3 to 4 foot seas but the weather buoy said the seas were 2 feet so we stayed close instead of running off shore. These people were accustom to catching largemouth bass and had never fished the ocean. We caught a lot of fish mostly small snappers including a small mutton snapper. The sea surface temperature was 79 degrees and clarity was about 25 feet. Besides the chicken rigs for the bottom I put out live bait on top we had several large barracuda hit the live bait but they kept swallowing the hook past the steel leader I finally hooked up one for them it was around a 25 pound fish being on an electronic anchor I was able to chase the fish. I found another part of the reef to fish and the wife hooked up with something big on the chicken rig, she was using a Penn 320 on a medium weight Ugly stick. She fought the fish for around 25 minutes, finally the fish came to the surface and was beat. It was a very large barracuda longer then my 150Qt cooler weighed around 40 pounds. The weather started to turn bad so we headed back with the two of them thoroughly amazed at the size and fight of the fish
