Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

South Indian River Report 4/29/2005

April 29, 2005

INSHORE:

This week bought a variety of weather patterns to deal with. Winds came from all directions at some time during the week, which limited fishing spots on some days this week. A spring tide on Wednesday left acres of flats out of the water and sent the fish to deeper cuts. It has calmed down somewhat later this week, but that's spring in Florida. Bait pods can be seen moving in the river and up on the flats. I love the Indian River this time of year.

Tarpon are starting to move into the river now. We saw several in the channel near the inlet this week. Snook fishing has been slow with the weather patterns changing but they will soon be hitting again. Try out on the flats in early morning with top water, live shrimp or soft baits. As the weather improves they will be on the flats searching for breakfast. Jim caught himself a 25" snook on the flats in the early part of the day this week.

Redfish are still on the flats most of the day. Some days they are pretty skittish and others are willing to take a spoon. We caught a 22" red was caught on a Capt. Mike's spoon this week. They are shallow so keep quiet and fish your bait or lure slow so they won't bolt on you. Some have been in excess of 36". Spoons, jigs and live baits are the best choices on the flats.

Trout are hitting live shrimp and top water in the early mornings. Fish two to four feet of water for the best chances. Expect the jacks to help theirselves to your baits, too. The larger jacks are starting to show up so hold on and have some fun with them. As the bait pods arrive, the jacks will reek havoc in the mornings.

The winds will be strong this coming weekend but should lay down some as the week continues. Rain chances through the first part of the week, but shouldn't hinder fishing. It should be a great week to be on the water. Hope to see you out there.

Need bait?? Stop in the Fishing Center of St Lucie in Fort Pierce for the liveliest shrimp in town! Clint or Kelly will help you with all your fishing needs. They have the best selection of fishing tackle around.

It's been a great week on the water. Fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!

Hope you had a chance to get out fishing!

Good Fishing!
