Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

South Indian River Fishing Report

May 5, 2005

INSHORE:

Lots of different weather patterns this week on the river, but fishing has been great this week. A few super calm mornings this week have provided excellent flats fishing weather. Storms on other days this week have given us a challenge to get out and find fishable waters. It's springtime on the Indian River.

One very calm morning this week, I was poling Greg across the flats and came across a school of reds tailing in front of the boat. When Greg cast his gold spoon and worked it in front of the school, he got slammed by a nice fish and boated a 23" snook from the middle of the reds. Nice catch! We have found the redfish feeding on the flats most every day this week. Ron was working a top water this week on the calm flats in one foot of water and it exploded with a fat and sassy 27" gator trout on the other end. Len caught a nice keeper flounder on a gold spoon on the flats this week and Vince captured the middle school first place in the TeenAngler championship tournament and biggest fish with his 23" Redfish caught on a live shrimp on the flats.

Snook have been on the flats in the early mornings looking for breakfast. Try top water, gold spoons, white soft baits or powdered donuts.....oops....that was my breakfast! Keep quiet on the flats, especially when it's dead calm. Cast to any movement in the water and watch out for tailing reds. It's a great time of year to fish the shallow waters of the Indian River. My go-to lure on the flats is always a gold spoon worked very slow. Keep one handy when you are out there fishing.

Lots of trout action has been around Bear Point most days with jacks and ladyfish also among the predators. Live shrimp has been the best choices of bait and chartreuse colors in artificial lures. The water has remained pretty clear with all the winds that have blown through this week. Two to four feet of water has been the most productive.

On the east side of the river near Harbor Branch, trout, ladyfish and jacks have been feeding in two to four feet of water. Schooling jacks have started busting bait pods and provide loads of fun to anglers for the summer. As more bait works it way into the river, the bigger jacks will be following. Jacks will hit about anything flashy or noisy.

You can find a great selection of lures and bait at the Fishing Center of St Lucie in Fort Pierce. Stop by and check out the selection and great prices.

It's been a great week on the water. Fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!

Hope you had a chance to get out fishing!

Good Fishing!
