Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

South Indian River Report

 May 12, 2005

INSHORE:

Looks like summer has finally arrived and the weather is getting a little more settled in. Some winds this week, but nothing to complain about. Lots of early mornings that are flat and calm make for a great time to break out the ol' top water lures and have some fun as the sun comes up. Chances of afternoon showers are common now so be aware of changing patterns as the day wears on. The bait pods are continuing to enter the river and onto the flats. I love this time of year!

The trout have provided the best fishing this week. Most areas are holding trout and they love top water in the first light. With the calm mornings, you can fish your favorite lure quite a while until the winds start kicking up a bit. Both sides of the river have been holding trout from schoolie size up to some gators. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a fish explode on your top water plug in the calm of the early morning.

Redfish are still on the flats most of the day. From singles to small schools of reds, they are feeding in the shallow flats. Use live shrimp, mullet, spoons and top water for the best chances of hooking up with a nice redfish. The water is pretty clean and the fish are a beautiful color this time of year. You must keep very quiet when working the flats as the fish are very wary and run at any disturbance in the water.

Snook fishing is still best at night around the port and bridges. The flats are holding snook up to 20+ inches. We caught one nice snook that was swimming along among a school of reds. As the day warms up, try around the mangroves along the deeper cuts with spoons or soft baits.

Schools of jacks are making their way around the river. Watch for the bait to explode out of the water and head that direction for some great fishing fun. Jacks can put up a nice fight, no matter what size they are. The bigger jacks are following the bait as it comes into the river and will continue to improve. Ladyfish are also patrolling the river and likewise are loads of fun to catch.

You can find a great selection of lures and bait at the Fishing Center of St Lucie in Fort Pierce. Stop by and check out the selection and great prices. They have great advice on what's biting and where to fish.

It's been a great week on the water.

Fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!

Hope you had a chance to get out fishing!

Good Fishing!
