Snappers and Triggers Provide Action

Capt. Mark Rosen

Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Saturday I took a couple out to my favorite spot 1 mile short of the snapper hole. NE out of Ft Pierce inlet 12 miles the depth there is 80 feet but the reef we fish comes up to 72 feet. The water temp was 81 degree and the clarity was amazing. The seas were much flatter than I expected but there was a very genital roller that were probably about 3 feet. As soon as I pulled back and deployed the Minkota trolling motor we were on a very large pod of fish so I hit the anchor watch button and we were in position. We were catching lots of grunts as usual but also a lot of vermilion snappers. All the snappers were just under legal so all were returned. We caught a bunch of trigger fish with the largest hitting 16" the rest were all around 13" and were returned. There were a lot of spinner sharks as well which they really enjoyed fighting. Toward the end of the day we stopped at a reef along the beach. We caught some lane snapper there and small sea bass. I put a grunt out on a float about 100 yards away from the boat and a nice king fish hit and leaped out of the water I had steel leader in anticipation but he still managed to bite off . I sent second live bait out and it got his and ran. I fired the engine up and we chased the fish down. It was a 6 foot shark. The angler got it to the boat and I cut the leader. It was a very nice way to end a great day on the water.
