South Indian River Fishing Report

Capt. Charlie Conner
August 1, 2009
Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

July 30, 2009

Inshore:

Fishing took a secondary seat to the mini-lobster season as lots of hungry divers headed out on the open seas to seek their share of the spiny creatures. Even though the fishing has been good on the river, the call of a lobster dinner was the main target during the two day annual event. Anglers will get back to fishing again and find lots of fish out there.

Snapper fishing has continued to do well along the channel edges, flats and around the bridges. Wayne Massey, Hunter and Bill kept busy with the snapper bite and even found a big sheephead as well on the flats. The trout bite has remained good, if you can get under the snapper to catch them. Lots of ladyfish are also out on the deeper flats to keep you busy. Top water lures early and live shrimp on a DOA popping cork should find some trout action. I had a good report of some redfish schools north of Fort Pierce and will be out looking for them this weekend. Snook fishing has been good on the high parts of the tide around the jetties. It's been a good week on the water, but a hot one, too!

August will bring more hot weather. The snapper and trout will continue to be a good target. Harbor Branch, Bear Point and Round Island is always good for some action. Look to the dropoffs along the edges of the flats for the fish to be waiting to feed.Docks will hold snapper, sheephead and many other species on the moving tides. Bridges will be holding the same. Get out early and watch for those summertime thunderstorms to continue to build in the afternoons.

Tip of the Week:
Have some fun this summer while the kids are out of school and get them out fishing soon. Whether it's on a boat, dock or beach, kids just enjoy fishing. The great part about it is that they don't care what they catch, especially the little ones. It's an easy way to show them a great time that they will remember for a long time. Take a kid fishing this summer and show them an adventure!

Remember, fishing is not just another hobby......it's an ADVENTURE!

Good Fishing,
Capt Charlie Conner
