South Indian River Fishing Report

Capt. Charlie Conner
August 1, 2012
Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

July 31, 2012

Summer weather wears on with hot, humid days and lots of afternoon thunderstorm action around the Treasure Coast. It's always hot this time of year and getting out early gives you the best opportunity to enjoy the fishing before it heats up in the afternoon. Our best bite has been early until about ten a.m. and most days have had a little breeze to lessen the worst of the heat.

Redfish schools are around the river this time of year. The schools are growing as more fish merge into the existing schools. We are finding them up to 40 fish right now and they will continue to grow as summer wears on. Most fish are in the upper slot range to just over slot size. Being quiet and patient on the flats is essential to finding some of the redfish around the river. DOA shrimp, CAL grub tails and live baits can get you hooked up on some nice size fish!

Our trout bite slowed a little this week with most of the fish coming early in the day on the flats. Top water lures are best at first light for some nice size trout on the grass flats. Move to deeper water as the sun rises and switch to soft baits like DOA shrimp or CAL jerk baits. There are a lot of snapper around the river on the flats, around the bridges and under the docks. We are catching a few nice mangroves and some short lane and mutton snapper. Live or dead shrimp works best.

Snook fishing has been mostly around the jetties and bridges. It's still catch and release so it's not crowded this time of year. The surf has been mostly whiting along the beaches and you can find some tarpon around the turning basin this time of year. It might be hot, but the fishing is really good right now!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE!!

Good Fishing and Be Safe,
Captain Charlie Conner
