South Indian River Fishing Report

Capt. Charlie Conner
July 18, 2018
Port St. Lucie - Saltwater Fishing Report

South Indian River Fishing Report 7/17

Inshore:

Summer is well established around the Treasure Coast. Hot days ahead will challenge outdoor activities. Plan your adventures early in the day to beat some of the heat and get off the water before the afternoon rains and hot weather arrive. The St. Lucie River is still a mess with all the draining of Lake Okeechobee and the toxic algae bloom ruining the waters there. Fort Pierce has faired much better. I find sea grass growing in many areas, especially north of there. Hopefully things improve all over the area soon! Expect hot days and lots of afternoon thunderstorms in the future for now.

I had Don and Paul on the boat recently. We were exploring the river north of Fort Pierce for the guys. The early bite was the best for us. They hooked a number of trout which most were hitting short that morning. DOA shrimp and top water lures got most of the action. Some jacks and a bluefish made for a fun morning until the sun got high enough to put a clamp on the bite. Water temperatures are hot right now. We found water up to 88 degrees on some of the flats. That means to get out as early as possible before the water heats up. Look for trout to be on the flats at first light for now.

The glass minnows are showing up and things should get crazy in the inlet and turning basin soon. Watch for glass minnows on the flats and fish around them for trout and other species. Snook fishing around the jetties has been good, but it's catch and release for now. The spillways have been active for snook anglers with all the rain.

Remember, as always, fishing is not just another hobby……it's an ADVENTURE!

Good Fishing,
Captain Charlie Conner
