Cool Down Means Hot Bite

Capt. Ron Kowalyk
October 16, 2014
Sanibel - Saltwater Fishing Report

Backbay: The fall cool off has perked up the bay bites across the board, only the very early morning tides put a chink in the bay bite. Tides are going our way with nice midmorning highs that'll open up the bite window several hours, I like! There plenty of whitebait and pins around in the shallower pass water in the sloughs, so easy pick'ins for you cast netter out there. The shrimp are scaling up and make for a good option in the snook, red and trout hunt; crews reported fast liner action on the docks in the passes through out our region. Evening bite for snook were even better, good reports from the Caloosahatchee, Peace and Myakka rivers. Softplastics fished at the bridges and docks in Cape Coral, Punta Gorda and Gasparilla Bay all gave up slot liners and some mega snook as well as big reds, gator trout and mixed size poons. Trout action has picked up across the board, about time! We are starting to find some really nice pompano on the flats adjacent to the Gulf and on the deeper flats at 3-6 ft. behind the pass mouths. My A" team buddy caught a mega pomp about 4 plus lbs but my camera got cramped up and I didn't get a picture, he actually caught it on a gold spoon, go figure?
