Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was excellent early in the week as a severe front was approaching. Clients caught snook, speckled trout, silver trout, Spanish mackerel, jacks, gag grouper, flounder, sea bass, and ladyfish on the flats using pilchards and shrimp. Ladyfish were thick in Big Pass along with jacks, bluefish, and mackerel and hit gold Cotee jigs. Fly casters caught trout and ladyffish on the flats near Bird Key, ladyfish and jacks in Big Pass, and Spanish mackerel in the Gulf near Point of Rocks. Wednesday and Thursday were windy, but Friday morning was nice and the action resumed as before with good action in Big Pass and the nearby flats.
I started the week off with a good trip with Mike Cribbs from Tampa, FL and his father-in-law Frank Regnery from CT. They free lined live shrimp and pilchards near Big Pass and caught slot speckled trout to 17", a dozen Spanish mackerel, 4 of which were around 3 pounds, jacks, grouper, silver trout, whiting, flounder, and ladyfish. We moved to a nearby shallow bar where they landed a couple more trout and a pair of snook around 22".
Janine and Francis Sacco from San Martin, CA had a good trip on Monday. Using live shrimp in the Yacht Club Channel, Radio Tower, and middlegrounds, they landed speckled trout to 18", Spanish mackerel, jacks, ladyfish, and grouper. It was a ladyfish on every cast using Cotee jigs in Big Pass.
Fly fisherman Oscar Vertanen from Finland had an excellent morning on Tuesday, just ahead of the front. We started off using chartreuse over white Clousers on the edges of flats near Bird Key, catching speckled trout to 16", ladyfish, and jacks. A move to Big Pass resulted in large ladyfish and jacks near Marker #15. The wind was light and out of the east, so we decided to go look out on the beach, hoping to find some false albacore. No luck, but we did come across some Spanish mackerel working on the surface near Point of Rocks. There were a bit skittish, but we landed a pair on white D.T. Specials and lost several flies.
Aidan Farrell and Martin Dillon are both recent arrivals to Sarasota and wanted a little "fishing lesson" to learn the local spots and techniques. We started off vertically jigging in Big Pass with gold Cotee jigs. Ladyfish, jacks, and bluefish kept them busy. We moved to the nearby flats; Bird Key, Marker #5, Marina Jacks, and Radio Tower, all produced good action on Gulp! Shrimp.
