Sarasota fishing report Capt Jim klopfer 6/6/2015

Capt. Jim Klopfer
June 6, 2015
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

towards the end of the week. This kind of dispelled the whole "fish don't bite after a full moon" thought. I employed live bait on most of my charters this week, including shrimp, pilchards, pinfish, and grunts, though clients also caught a few fish casting Bass Assassin jigs. Speckled trout to 20", Spanish mackerel to 4 pounds, mangrove snapper to 14", gag grouper, black sea bass, lane snapper, jack crevelle, ladyfish, and other species were landed this week.

I started my week off with Tom Krall, Ken Weis, Matt Weis, and Gabe Weis (8) from Toledo, Ohio. Using large hand-picked shrimp, the boys did well, catching several nice mangrove snapper, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, jacks, sea bass, and ladyfish near Bird Key. Gabe crushed the adults, catching more than the other three combined!

Joe Culloo and his buddy Scott went out on a charter on Tuesday morning. Bad weather was threatening, but we gave it a try. The storms chased us in 15 minutes early, but the bite was good! We started off with shrimp under corks near Selby, catching trout and ladyfish. I decided to catch bait and chum, and the guys experienced steady action on a variety of species including mackerel, trout, jacks, snapper, grouper, sea bass, ladyfish,
and more.

I had a great charter on Wednesday with a couple of father-daughter teams. I picked up Chip Crowe and Frances (11) from Chattanooga and Will Taylor and Mirabel (10) from Atlanta at Centennial Park and we ran to Big Pass to catch bait. It was a bit smaller, barely useable, but proved to be effective. The girls did great, catching a LOT of fish including speckled trout to 18", Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds, Mangrove snapper to 13", sea bass, gag grouper, jacks, and ladyfish. We fished the deep grass near Otter Key, then finished up at Marina Jacks.

Fishing was fantastic on Thursday from Steve Popoon and his son-in-law Adam. I caught bait and we hit the first spot neat Lido Key, having steady action on nice-sized mackerel, trout, jacks, grouper, snapper, and ladyfish. I needed to "relaod" on bait, then ran to Marina Jacks were the action was non-stop for over and hour. Every bait that hit the water got eaten. The boys laded a couple of nice Spanish mackerel to 4 pounds, trout to 18", sea bass to 14", and a bunch of jacks and ladyfish.

I finished up my week on Saturday with a corporate trip, a bunch of guys in the contact lens business. It started off a bit slow as we were greeted with no wind and a slack tide. They caught a few trout, sea bass, and ladyfish at Radio Tower and Marker # 5 on Bass Assassin jigs. A move to Big Pass produced a few ladyfish. The tide finally started to move in and I loaded up on bait. Action was very steady at marina Jacks free ling the pilchards. Trout to 18", mackerel, jacks, sea bass, grouper, mangrove and lane snapper, and ladyfish kept the rods bent and the boys smiling!
