Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was very good once again on the deep grass flats near Siesta Key this week, especially later as the tides improved. The pilchards have been getting larger were easy to catch this week. Anchoring up and chumming the fish behind the boat was very productive, though clients did catch some fish casting Gulp! Shrimp, too. Speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, sharks, mangrove snapper, gag grouper, sharks, black sea bass, jacks, ladyfish, flounder, and other species kept clients happy on fishing charters this week.

Early in the week Mike Sullivan and his daughter Kelsey (16) and Kelly Johnston and her son Grant (8) had a good charter. We left Centennial Park and ran and caught bait. Chumming the deep flats near Big Pass produced speckled trout to 18", bluefish to 2 pounds,
Bill Lanzit treated two of his sons, Mitch and Jake, to a charter on Wednesday. We left CB's Saltwater Outfitters and headed north, casting Gulp Shrimp at Marina Jacks, Radio Tower, and Bird Key flats. Action was steady, with the boys catching trout, jacks, ladyfish, sea bass, and more.

Brent Hagar and his teenage daughter Hannah went out on Thursday morning. Bait was easy and I loaded up, then hit a deep flat nearby. Speckled trout, mangrove snapper, gag grouper, jack crevelle, and ladyfish provided good action with a lot of "double headers". We moved to New pass to try for a snook or two, but no luck, other than a flounder. We finished up at the Radio Tower with more trout and ladyfish and a small shark.

I finished up my week with a fun charter with Fred Kala from Yorkville, IL and his daughters Brooke (12), Nikki (15) and Melanie (17). I wish all of my clients could cast and fish as well as these young ladies! Bait was easy and for the first 2 1/2 hours it was pretty much non-stop with the girls landing bluefish, Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, several nice mangrove snapper, gag grouper, ladyfish, a ton of jacks, black sea bass, and a big sail cat! The tide peaked around 9:00 and it slowed down after that, we just picked at them and then headed in. Great day with a great family!
