Sarasota fishing report Capt Jim Klopfer 8/15/2015

Capt. Jim Klopfer
August 15, 2015
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was VERY good early in the week then tapered off a bit towards the end. The water temperature rose up into the mid to high 80's, just a bit too warm. Afternoon rains should drop it back down. Some large speckled trout were landed by clients this week, as well as Spanish mackerel to 2 1/2 pounds, bluefish, mangrove snapper to 13", flounder to 19", black sea bass, jack crevelle, small gag grouper, sharks, ladyfish, and more. Live pilchards and threadfin herring accounted for most of the fish. The flats near New Pass, the Middlegrounds and Radio Tower, were the best spots.

I started my week off with a good charter on Sunday with Peter Campo, his son Patrick, and his college buddy Casey. We started off casting jigs at the Radio Tower, but there was not much going on. I caught bait and hit the Middlegrounds, where action was very good. Speckled trout to 21", Spanish mackerel, gag grouper, mangrove snapper, jacks, ladyfish, and catfish provided steady action. I ran out of bait and "re-loaded" on the massive schools of threadfin herring that were on the surface. I moved a little west and we lit them up again, adding a bluefish to the species list and catching more nice trout, jacks, and ladyfish.

Allen Hartman from Roanoke, VA and his daughters Hadley (5) and Emily Claire (8) experienced good action on Monday. We caught bait and hit several spots at the Middlegrounds, with the gang catching speckled trout to 21", several Spanish mackerel to 2 1/2 pounds, mangrove snapper to 13", sea bass to 12", gag grouper, jack crevelle, ladyfish, and a bluefish. The girls caught all of their fish on pilchards while Allen used the fly rod for a bit and also did some bait fishing.

I had another productive charter on Tuesday, with similar results. Fletcher Robbins, his dad Larry, and friend Mike caught speckled trout to 22", lost another larger one, Spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, sea bass, jacks, ladyfish, and small sharks at the Middlegrounds chumming with live pilchards.

Tom Beall, his son Ian, and son in law Marlo had a decent trip. They caught a lot of fish, mostly speckled trout, but not anything overly exciting. Still, they landed around 50 fish. After 9 days in a row, I took Thursday off.

I fished with Chad Miller and his wife Jennifer from Louisville, KY on Friday morning. They did not catch a ton of fish, but did land some decent sized fish, including a 19" flounder, Spanish mackerel to 2 1/2 pounds, mangrove snapper to 13", ladyfish, jacks, and Jennifer had fun fighting a big stingray for 15 minutes. The Middlegrounds was the best spot. I had a last-minute cancellation on Saturday, due to a sick kid. Day off!!
