Tough weather conditions result in fair action in Sarasota, FL

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

I only got out a couple of days this week due to a little vacation time and some difficult weather conditions. Action was fair, though persistent anglers did catch some quality fish. The deep grass flats at Bird Key and along the south end of Longboat Key produced speckled trout to 17", as well as bluefish, jacks, ladyfish, snapper, and other species. Docks and shorelines in Robert's Bay provided action for anglers casting Rapala X-Raps, Bass Assassin jigs, and live shrimp.

On Tuesday I took out local SNN anchor Allyson Henning and her friend Lynden Blake, an SNN reporter. We used live shrimp under popping corks at the Radio Tower and caught a few speckled trout and a bluefish. There was little wind, so I moved to a grass flat that dropped off sharply into deeper water and anchored up. Lynden had the hot hand, landing a dozen or so fish, including several nice trout and mangrove snapper. We finished up near Country Club Shores catching more trout before calling it a morning. Wednesday brought us torrential rain and Thursday was very breezy.

I got back out of Friday with local resident Doc Dojutrek for his annual birthday fishing charter. We targeted snook and reds for 6 hours, experiencing decent action in some protected areas in Robert's Bay. Doc did well casting a gold #8 Rapala X-Rap and a 4" Bass Assassin Sea Shad (New Penny) on a 1/16 ounce Pro jig head. Snook to 22" and jack crevelle provided steady action, mostly around docks in 4 to 6 feet of water. The artificial bite slowed as it got later in the morning so we finished up using large live shrimp under docks to fool black drum, mangrove snapper, and snook to 26".
