Fishing Conditions Challenging - Stuart, FL

Capt. Nick Cremasco
June 18, 2013
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

June 9:

Today we fished with Steve and his guest from the West coast of Florida. We enjoyed great weather and improved temperatures from yesterday. On our 3/4 day fishing charter today we caught plenty of bonito and a handful of dolphin. We tried bottom fishing but the current was smoking to the North. We had almost 4 knots of current in 115 feet of water. We made a couple of attempts on the bottom but it was futile. After getting our fill of bonito we saved some time and ran inshore to look for some Cobia. We did not find any on the first two wrecks and decided to anchor up on the 3rd spot. We got spooled on a spinning rod by a big shark and caught a barracuda. Not what we were looking for but exciting non the less.

Looking forward to tomorrow. Hope the conditions continue to improve.

June 10:

Covered over 80 miles today looking for reasonable conditions to bottom fish since pelagic fishing has been slow. Cold water and current to 5 knots proved a bad combination. Tomorrow is another day.

June 11:

Today we cancelled our South Florida fishing charter because or poor conditions and weather.

June 12

Today we fished with Andy Novak from LMR Tackle and his guest. The water temps had finally warmed up on the bottom but the fishing has yet to recover. Outside of 150ft we battled currents as strong as 5.5 knots. We did a lot of running around trying to make it happen. The last two spots of the shortened day we caught 1-3 Cobia to 32lbs. We lost one to a shark and pulled the hook on one before finally catching one for the box.

Hopefully the fish will find the better conditions by tomorrow.

June 13

Today we fished with regulars Cole, Phillip and their guest on a South Florida Tuna fishing charter. We had fair action at best. We caught a 65lb Yellowfin, 5 blackfin and 5 Mahis from 15-25lbs. The Yellowfin were scarce the weather was borderline from sea conditions and rain storms.

June 15:

Today we fished the Stuart Sailfish Club Ladies Tournament with my wife Mandy and our neighbor Jaimee. We enjoyed amazing weather and fair fishing action. We caught about a dozen Bonito, jumped a sail off, caught a Cobia and some Kings.

Congrats to the winners.

June 16:

Today we fished with Trey, Chris and his son. We enjoyed great weather and decent fishing. We caught a limit of 3 Gag Grouper from barely legal to 28lbs. We also caught a couple kings to 12lbs, amberjack and bonito. We battled a large fish for a little over an hour that ate a bonito but was able to spit it out before we got a look at it.

Good action on our fishing charter with some great eating fish, some steady action and a battle to remember. Looking forward to a great day of charter fishing the Treasure Coast tomorrow.

June 17:

Today we fished with Nick and his guest on a South Fl fishing charter. We started the day with the intentions of chasing some Yellowfin Tuna. However when we got 25 miles offshore the seas had a different plan for us. So we turned around and went back to the marina. I swapped out the 50's for the local gear and filled the live well with bait from the pen. We had a great couple hours of bottom fishing catching 5 out of 13 Grouper bites. We missed a handful and broke off 4 fish in the bottom. The Grouper weighed between 15 and 25lbs on our Deep Sea Bottom fishing charter. We also caught Sea Bass and Amberjack from 29-65lbs. We tried live baiting for sails and mahi but had no luck. We saved an hour at the end of the day to look for cobia but never found any.

Looking forward to some great bottom fishing on our 3/4 day fishing charter tomorrow.
