Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish season has been inconsistent so far because of mild weather and a lot of SE and South winds. However when it blows out of the North expect some great fishing. Seeing 12-15 sails a day fishing out of Stuart is not uncommon during the months of December and January. Trolling circle hook rigged ballyhoo and pulling teasers such as a dredge or squid chain greatly increases your chances at big numbers of sails.
Boats were average 4-6 releases a day in the most recent sailfish tournament and we saw 14 sails yesterday in our spread during our charter. Dolphin fishing has continued to be excellent with the North and NE winds. Most of the fish are 8-12lbs and they are coming 4 and 5 at a time. Keep some spinning rods ready with squid to capitalize on fish that show up around the boat while you are fighting the ones you hooked while trolling. We kept a dozen mahi's yesterday on our charter and went through 7 dozen baits on critters such as Bonito, Blackfin and Kings.
Bottom fishing is starting to improve after a long stretch of terrible weather and conditions. On 12-12-12 we kept 10 Groupers (8 Reds, 2 Gags) and also kept a limit of 4 AJ's to 40lbs. Triggerfish were biting too. When the current is moving North the last couple of days the bottom fishing has proven to be pretty solid. South current no good don't waste your time.
