Great Late Mullet Run Bite

Capt. Bob Bushholz
October 20, 2020
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

We are more than halfway through the fall mullet run which happens each year in September and October. Targeting baitschools inshore and along the beach, look for snook, tarpon and jack crevalles tearing the baits up. Livebaiting finger mullet or artificial baits resembling them will work great. Match the hatch.

Also we catch the majority of our redfish in this 2 month period mostly bouncing shrimp on trollrite jigs. Most reds will be in the 18-27" slot with a few over slot fish.

The snook bite is still good fishing bridges, docks and the inlet. Snook will start moving up the rivers after their summer spawn. Season remains open till December 15th with a 28-32" slot.

Tripletail bite is heating up on the Treasure Coast. We catch them year-round but seem to encounter more after October 15th when the commercial stone crab traps are present. One of the best eating fish on Earth, tripletail regulations are 18" min, 2 per person. 2018 was a banner year here catching 178 tt's.

Pompano, Spanish Mackerel and bonefish are right around the corner normally appearing inshore November- April. Lot's of pompano and bonefish in the surf right now but on the small side.

I always look forward to the Spanish Mackerel bite that we target along the beach in the winter and spring. We cast Gulfstream glass minnows jigs ( green ) letting them sink 10 seconds and then retrieve rapidly. You can normally load up on the Macs in no time. I like to smoke them and make smoked mackerel dip (smack).
