Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

It has been a while and unbelievably another hurricane since my last report. I hope you all came out of it well. In the few times I have been out, as of late, there were not a lot of good things happening off Stuart. The brown water from the runoff has driven the live bait from my favorite spots making it a ballyhoo trolling affair. If one is willing to travel 10 to 15 miles from shore, dolphin could be found on offshore edges. Near shore has been tough due to the brown water but it is gradually improving. I am looking forward to calmer seas and better fishing in the coming week.
The Indian River has been a bright spot the past couple of weeks. Finger mullet and pilchards are in abundance, and are being pounded by snook, trout, redfish, jacks, Spanish mackerel and bluefish. We have been catching our limit of trout on lures and live pilchards on a float. We lost plenty of hooks to the toothy species until we targeted them with thin stranded wire. Some of the mackerel were up to 3 pounds. We also had a few small snook in the 24 inch range. All of this action is taking place near the power plant on both sides of the river. One day it may be the east side and the next day the west side south of the power lines. If the bite is not on, just go to the other bank and try it there. In the St. Lucie, the spillways are producing snook and even freshwater bass. Just bring a net, catch your bait, and put it on a hook, and you will hook up. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery to these devastating storms and keep fishing.
