Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The winds have been blowing for three weeks and the only boats going through the St. Lucie Inlet have been the big sport fishers. Seas have been from 7 to 9 ft. for days on end. This week the wind and waves have subsided enough for the smaller boats to venture out.
The sailfish bite has been spotty. The fish are going by us in schools but not stopping to stay awhile as they did last year. I attribute this to the lack of bait at our usual spots, which have been empty since the hurricanes. Last week we had a double header while a boat nearby had a triple on at the same time. After a flurry which lasted about 30 minutes, the fish moved on. A similar situation is happening with the dolphin. One day they are all over and the next they are nowhere to be found.
The king fish action has been pretty good in 60 to 90 ft. This morning they were in even closer. A couple of cobia have been caught but even better, black fin tuna have been around also. Several boats have brought them in up to 30 lbs. There was one boat that came in with a yellow fin close to 100 lbs.
In the Indian River the trout bite is still going strong. Fish the side protected from the wind. Live shrimp and mirro lures are the ticket along with small finger mullet. The pompano bite is either great or non-existent depending on the day. Shrimp-tipped jigs or sand fleas are the best bet.
The north fork of the St. Lucie has made a great comeback since the storms with mullet jumping everywhere. Jacks, an occasional pompano, sand perch, black drum, and snook are roaming its waters. The Club Med area is yielding some monster snook on live mullet. The big mullet fished on the bottom work great. More later.
