Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Stuart area has really turned on. The past couple of weeks have yielded some great dolphin catches and surprisingly a good number of sails. Some big king mackerel are being caught both north and south of the inlet. Some have been over 50 lbs. The key to all of this is the abundance of live bait. Greenies are being caught in decent numbers north of the inlet from the beach to 30 ft. out. Just yesterday, several sailfish were in the shallows chasing them. Dolphin are just about anywhere you can find some weed and flying fish. A lot of them are in the 10 to 30 lb range. One day last week, everyone was catching them by the dozen or more. We had the good fortune the other day of pulling some large snook off a barge south of the inlet. They were in the upper end of the slot limit. We also were busted off by several larger fish which pulled our bait and line back into the barge on their initial run. There is decent snapper fishing on the reefs with a few grouper thrown in.
In the Indian River, the trout bite is very good by Herman’s Bay. There is plenty of bait being chased by jacks, bluefish, and an occasional snook in the early morning and evening. Keep in mind that snook season ends June 1st and will reopen September 1st.
The St. Lucie is holding snook at the bridges. They are being caught by a variety of artificial lures at night on the moving tides at both the Dime and Roosevelt bridges. A long bomber lure is a good bet. There are plenty of big jacks and snook around the docks, seawalls and canals in the north fork. Top water plugs are the ticket.
The catch of the week is dolphin. If there is any way you can get out there, do it. More later.
