Fishing Report for Indian River & St. Lucie River - Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
June 6, 2005
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing has been great the past couple of weeks if you could get out between the monsoons. Kings have been chasing bait from the surf out to 30 ft. of water just outside the St. Lucie Inlet. Both greenies and sardines have been plentiful. The dolphin bite has been steady from 80 to 250 ft. Some large bulls have been caught up to 45 lbs and we heard of one fish over 70 lbs. The sailfish bite has slowed some but the bottom bite has taken off. Last week a 102 lb. cubera snapper won the TCBA tournament out of Stuart. There has also been a tuna bite with some black fin and a couple of yellow fin being caught. Amberjack are bending rods over some of our favorite wrecks. It is getting to the best part of the year for fishing. Some tarpon are showing up in the Indian River in Little Mud Creek. Snook, redfish, and large trout are biting well there also, from the Jensen causeway up past the power plant. Large jacks and ladyfish round out the feast. It appears the tarpon run has begun in the north fork of the St. Lucie. Last Saturday we observed schools of fish in the 20 to 60 lb range, Unfortunately we were only able to get one to hit a d.o.a. terroreyes. Large jacks are patrolling the area pouncing on the mullet near the seawalls. The bridges are still holding snook which now have to be released. The next few weeks should be even better with permit and african pompano coming into the mix. More later.
