Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

We have had such a great mixed bag of fishing the past couple of weeks that I am finding it hard to figure out where to start. Dolphin , sails, cobia, blue and white marlin, tuna, kings, bonita, tarpon and today I saw a large school of permit all out of the St. Lucie inlet. Some of the larger boats have been traveling 20 to 25 miles out for some yellowfin. Tuna, while blackfin have been caught in as little as 60 ft. of water on live threadfins. The mahi bite has exploded with lots of boats in double digits on both live and dead bait. Find the rips and weed lines and get ready for some action. Today we found a pallet near a weed line and had a blast with schoolies on light tackle. We saw hundreds of peanuts and had to get away from them to save our baits. At least two charter boats had marlin releases in the past week while targeting other species. I heard of several cobia up to 70 lbs being caught as well. The fish are all over due to the abundance of bait. It is not uncommon to load up on bait in fifteen minutes and even catch some fish while you are doing it. Kings and cobia are lurking in the schools of sardines and threadfins so hook a fresh one up while you are catching them and wait for a bite.
Snook are still holding on the local bridges but the movement to the inlet rocks is beginning. I have been using live baits from outside the inlet and bringing them inside to catch snook at the bridges and the canals of the north fork of the St. Lucie River. We have several behind my house this week with one that weighed 35 lbs. We also had a small tarpon of twenty five pounds. Remember that snook season closes today. Target trout and let those snook spawn. The trout bite is early and furious. Topwater up til 800 AM and then use shrimp on a cork. You may also be surprised with a nice red if you are throwing under the docks. Look for the tarpon numbers to increase over the next couple of weeks along with permit. More later.
