Fishing Report for Indian River & St. Lucie River - Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
July 1, 2006
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

We are into a typical summer weather pattern with rain just about every afternoon. The key is to get out early and get back in when the black clouds show up. Just about every morning as I head to the inlet, I can see tarpon rolling in the north fork off the St. Lucie and around the Roosevelt bridge area. Getting them to bite is another thing. Live mullet and D.O.A. terrorizes are the best bet. Snook are also in the canals and seawalls in the area but must be released when caught. Black drum and some big jacks can be caught at the dime bridge ner the abutments. Look for rolling tarpon at the crossroads as well as off the beach. Being out early is the key as the boat traffic will spook them. Bait is plentiful and a variety is available. Threadfins are just outside the inlet and schools of Spanish sardines on the sandpile. Just about any species can be caught at the sandpile on a given day. We have had barracuda, kings, shark, bonita, some sailfish, and just yesterday we saw a mahi caught there. All of this occurs in under 50 ft. of water. Moving further out, the dolphin bite is hit and miss with luck playing a big part. We have been on many a weedline with nobody home. Chumming could definitely improve your odds. In the Indian River there are reports of trout and some redfish for the early angler. More later.
