Fishing Report for Indian River & St. Lucie River - Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
August 7, 2006
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish and cobia have been bending rods off of Stuart for the past couple of weeks. The summer sailfish bite has been a pleasant surprise with many boats catching multiple fish. The best bite has bee in 60 ft of water just north of the inlet. Live threadfin herring and sardines have been the bait of choice. The fish are feeding near the large bait pods which are in a great abundance. Cobia have been following these baits also. Several have been caught everyday, but the best was last Friday when large schools of them were feeding just south of the inlet in 35 ft. of water. The bite lasted all morning as more and more boats joined in. One boat had 20 fish and had to release 18 of them. It was one of those days that occur once every several years. The dolphin bite has virtually shutdown. Very few fish are being caught. Kings and barracuda are also in 30 ft. feeding on the shallow bait pods. Snook are all around the inlet and are being caught and released every day. There are a few tarpon being caught early. Amberjacks are on the wrecks and are ready to give your tackle a workout. They are being caught on both live baits and butterfly jigs. The Indian River has an early morning trout bite. Live pinfish and top water plugs are working well. Tarpon can be found at both Big and Little Mud Creeks. The bridges are holding a variety of fish including snook and tripletail. The north fork of the St. Lucie has some snook on the seawalls and in the canals. Look for tarpon near the mouth of Bessey Creek. More later.
