Fishing Report for Indian River & St. Lucie River - Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
December 18, 2006
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

High seas wind and rain have been keeping the offshore fishing to the larger boats. We have had more rain in the past three days than we had all summer but some boats do get out. Last week 111 sailfish were caught in a tournament that the boats fish any three days in a four day span. Two of those days saw nine foot seas but the participants persevered. The sailfish bite has actually gotten better and should continue to do so through January. Some nice dolphin are being brought in along with a wahoo or two. We just need a break in the windy weather for the smaller boats to get a shot at it. Snook season ended on December 15th and some nice slot sized fish were caught at the Stuart Causeway before it ended. We try not to target these fish when the season is closed because we do not want to damage or kill a fish that we have to release. Near the inlet there are bluefish and big jacks along with some lady fish. There are black drum and sheepshead at the Roosevelt Bridge along with croaker and sandperch. Some flounder are still being caught over sandy bottom using plastic grubs on a jighead. Bluefish, whiting and Spanish mackerel can be caught in the surf when conditions allow. Remember that trout season reopens on January 1st. We cannot wait to get into some tasty filets. Here is hoping for better weather and for everyone to have a Happy Holliday. More later.
