Fishing Report for Indian River & St. Lucie River - Offshore

October 2, 2007
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

First it was rain, then it was the wind and ten foot seas, but we were able to find a couple of days that we were able to get offshore and fish. For the first time in weeks, dolphin were being caught in good numbers and various depths ranging from sixty five feet to one hundred and eighty feet. Most of these fish were being caught on trolled baits as live bait was hard to come by due to the runoff from all the rain. Another bright spot was the schools of Spanish mackerel that were all over just outside the inlet. Even though we were after dolphin, we could not resist catching a few before we went offshore. Some sailfish were caught and we had one jump off on us. The surf guys were getting a mixed bag of bluefish, snook and an occasional tarpon. The river fishing was yielding trout, snook and big jacks on finger mullet. The mullet run is in full force and a lot of offshore anglers are netting them in the river to bring outside to make up for the lack of herring and sardines. As of this report, the seas are still over seven feet but the wind has decreased and the wave height should come down in the next couple of days and we all can get out and fish again. More later.
