Fishing Report for Indian River & St. Lucie River - Offshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
October 18, 2007
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The past two weeks had its ups and downs as far as the wave heights, but when we could get out, the fishing was pretty good. We found dolphin and an occasional sail in one hundred and twenty feet near a nice edge of scattered weed. Due to a lack of live bait, we trolled ballyhoo and we were able to cover a lot of ground. At one point we had three dolphin on at the same time with only two anglers on the boat. It is quite a challenge to gaff a lively fish with one hand while holding a rod in the other. There are some kings in sixty to eighty feet so be sure to have some stinger rigs aboard. There was also several skipjack and blackfin tuna caught the past week. Near the inlet there are bluefish, jack and Spanish mackerel to be caught so the surf fishermen should have a good weekend. The Indian river trou fishing has been pretty good north of the Jensen Beach Causeway. Look for the bait schools and cast around them. There are snook, jacks, mackerel and bluefish mixed in. The bridges are good spots for snook, goliath grouper and black drum. Shrimp tipped jigs and swimming plastic baits are the best bet. The next few days look ideal weather wise, so get out and get some fish. More later.
