Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report
After almost two weeks of freezing weather, south Florida is warming up. We had water temperatures in the mid fifties at one point which really shut down the fishing. As the warm up progressed, the sail and dolphin bite picked up. As the seas subsided the smaller boats were able to get out. Thread fin herring were once again available and we were able to live bait again. Some rays have bee moving through the area and a cobia or two are being caught. Kings are being caught in sixty to eighty feet on six Mile Reef and off the Loran Tower. The bottom bite has also been steady in that area. Vermillions, triggerfish, and porgy have been the mainstay. A couple of wahoo have also been boated. The Spanish mackerel in Peck's Lake have been enormous. They are the size of small kings and will do great on the smoker. We had a blast catching them on light tackle the other day. Look for pompano on Sailfish flats, the Stuart Causeway, and Hell's Gate. We caught a bunch the other day using Doc's Goofy Jigs. Look for the snook fishing to pick up as the water temps rise. The Roosevelt Bridge is starting to produce again. Look for the pompano to move up into the North Fork of the St. Lucie River to begin their spawn. More later.
Fishing offshore out of the St. Lucie Inlet and inhore on the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon, Captain Kevin Drennan takes up to four people on half, three quarter, and full day trips. He has been fishing the area for eight years and enjoys using light tackle for big fish.
