Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The offshore bite has slowed down considerably as summer like temperatures the past couple of weeks have been in the mid to upper eighties. The problem has been compounded by a lack of live bait in significant amounts. The past two days sardines are being caught in increasing numbers in about sixty feet of water off of the St. Lucie Inlet. Hopefully with the latest cold front on the way, things should improve. Sails have been infrequent and the dolphin bite has been scattered. At times like this it is better to fish the bottom as we did the other day. We had several bites on dead sardines while dropping on a wreck in seventy five feet. There were some nice lane snapper and we had a big cobia follow one of our baits to the boat. He would not eat as we tried several lures, then he turned and slowly swam off. The Spanish mackerel bite has also slowed considerably and we have been settling for a handful of fish instead of a full box. We caught a couple of pompano near the inlet and a mixed bag of mangrove snapper, croaker, trout, jack, sheepshead, and black drum at the Ten Cent Bridge. There are some pompano in the north fork of the St. Lucie River up past Club Med. Shrimp tipped jigs weighing a half an ounce work best. The first hour of the changing tides are the most productive times. More later.
