Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

High winds and a record breaking cold front, made it very difficult to fish so far in April. Water temperatures were in the sixties near shore. As it warmed up, the fishing slowly improved. The dolphin and sailfish bite remains slow , but It should pick up as the April dolphin run kicks into gear. A lot of the bigger charter boats have been doing tuna runs to the far side of the gulfstream and coming back with a few yellowfin and some big dolphin. We fished Easter Sunday, and after trolling live baits for a couple of hours we went to some bottom numbers and started to fill the box with beeliners and porgy. After an hour of a red hot bite, we were surrounded by a school of amberjack that were grabbing our snapper as we were reeling them in. It was bedlam to have three amberjack on at the same time on light tackle. This went on for the next hour and everyone had sore arms so we went back to trolling. Near shore there are schools of big jacks that are feeding on anything that they can find. Blues and Spanish mackerel are feeding in the surf. Inside the inlet there are blues and sheepshead being caught in decent numbers. Near the bridges look for black drum and a few tripletail being caught on shrimp tipped jigs. The snook fishing really turns on at night at the bridges. Bombers and wind cheaters are working well. More later.
