Stuart Area Offshore and Inshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
May 29, 2009
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

Rain has been falling every day in south Florida and it has kept us at home on most days the past two weeks, but when we did get out, the fishing was great. The return of easy to get live bait has really turned the fishing up a notch. Threadfin herring are near the beach both north and south of the inlet. Sardines are plentiful near the Bullshark Barge south of the inlet. We loaded up on them the other day and headed out to about one hundred feet. As we were drifting , we saw two big dolphin swim by the boat. We dropped a bait to them and the rods went off. One fish jumped off but the other one fought for fifteen minutes before we were able to stick a gaff into it. It was a nice cow that weighed twenty six pounds. We turned the boat around and slow trolled back to where we hooked up when all three rods went off at the same time. Three gaffer dolphin were jumping and crossed the lines up. Our only way out was to cut two lines and boat the biggest fish. The next time we got hit, the boat was surrounded by fish and we took them in one at a time as one fish was left next to the boat with the rod in the holder. We lost a couple but we wound up with seven nice fish in the fifteen to thirty pound range. On another trip, we had mutton snapper and a few lanes. We could have had all the kings we wanted but just took a couple for the smoker. Big snook are roaming the seawalls in the north for k of the St. Lucie River and tarpon are in the south fork near the locks. As the bait situation gets better, look for tarpon along the beach. Snook season ends June 1st so be gentile with them as they are released. More later.
