Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

It has been one of the coldest Decembers on record in south Florida but the sailfish bite has been red hot. Double digit releases and triple hookups have been common for the boats that have endured the cold temperatures and rough seas off of Stuart. Dolphin and a few blackfin tuna are also being caught in decent numbers. My neighbor came in with two nice cobia last week, drifting blue runners over the Roosevelt Bridge rubble in ninety feet northeast of the inlet. We had a very successful trip off of the Loran Tower, catching some large trigger fish, sea bass, and porgies. We also released several vermillion snapper which are off limits until April 1st. We had all the Spanish mackerel we wanted at Peck's Lake and we were able to smoke some for the holidays. On the days we could not get offshore we fished near the inlet and had a blast catching blue fish on light tackle. They were hitting on just about anything we threw at them. It made my day for clients that just wanted to bend a rod. We also caught jacks, lady fish and blue runners. The pompano have been hard to come by, but hopefully as it warms up this week we will be able to find them. More later.
