Stuart Area Offshore and Inshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
September 23, 2011
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The dolphin bite has really taken off the past two weeks. Last Friday we started the day out by netting some bunker in the St. Lucie River east of the Roosevelt Bridge. Pelicans were diving on them and tarpon were feeding from below. Once out of the inlet we caught some sardines and greenies on the Shrimper. On the way out we noticed big weed patches in fifty two feet of water and decided to go back to it. As soon as the first bunker hit the water a nice gaffer dolphin pounced on it. We would work a patch for a while and then move on to another. It seemed that every time we pulled up to a new weed patch, we would hook up multiple dolphin. We had one hit a bait four times and drop it every time he went airborne. We caught them on every species of bait we had. The fish stayed in between forty and eighty feet for over a week as the weed patches held together. There were catches of over twenty fish for some boats and my freezer is packed with vacuum packed mahi fillets. The mullet run has begun and the predators are chasing them along the beaches and up into the rivers. Tarpon, snook and big jacks are making the mullet fly as they move in for a feast. Early morning is the time to be on the river to find snook feeding on the mullet. Also the shadow lines around the bridges at night will yield plenty of snook on bombers and flair hawks. We also fished the river and caught more jacks and lady fish than a person could ever want. More later.
