Stuart Area Offshore and Inshore

Capt. Kevin Drennan
January 17, 2012
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

The sailfish bite in the past two weeks has been unbelievable. Tournament records were not just broken, they were shattered. On one day the fleets form the West Palm Beach Fishing Club and the Pelican Yacht Club out of Fort Pierce, released over nine hundred sails. One boat released twenty seven fish in a day trolling dead bait. It was all preceded by a strong cold front that had day temps in the fifties and rough seas. As the weather returned to normal, cobia were being spotted along the beach which may signal an early run for these fun to catch fish. Live bait has been on and off but look for thread fins around the Sandpile. Dolphin have been hit and miss but some are being caught. We had another great day of bottom fishing south of the inlet releasing sea bass and vermilions but coming home with some nice trigger fish and porgies along with a couple of lane snapper. We also released a beautiful red grouper. The Spanish mackerel are heavy at Peck's Lake and there are bluefish at the inlet and in the surf. There is a good black drum bite at the bridges. Pompano have moved into the rivers and are being caught in the north fork of the St. Lucie River near Club Med. More later.
