Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

It has been warm and windy with temperatures in the eighties. The water temps have been holding in the mid to high seventies and the usual winter fishing bite is a bit out of kilter. Sailfish should be pushing through in large numbers but they have not yet done so. The pompano still remain north of us with only a few fish being taken here. Even the Spanish mackerel bite has slowed as the fish look for cooler water. The saifish tournaments this season have not come close to the record number of fish released last season. In the next week, two cold fronts are predicted to pass through and hopefully that will pick things up. Inside the inlet there are plenty of jacks, lady fish and sheepshead. Last week we caught a dozen ribbon fish by the Stuart Causeway. We went to Peck's Lake yesterday to grab some mackerel and all we caught were blue runners and jacks. I was fishing with Kevin Seits and his son Trevor and all Trevor wanted to do was catch his first Spanish mackerel. We went back inside and caught plenty of jacks and lady fish. On one of his last casts, Trevor got his fish that he wanted all day. The way he was beaming you would have thought he caught a marlin.
There have been a few cobia caught just of the beach and we should be seeing more of them in the coming weeks. Look for the saifish and the pompano to return as the water temps drop. More later.
