Top Target Remains Clean Water

Capt. Bob Bushholz
July 20, 2013
Stuart - Saltwater Fishing Report

With the ongoing water releases from Lake O the past few months, we continue to concentrate our efforts aboard Catch 22 fishing in cleaner water north of the Jensen Beach Causeway. The dumping has increased to two billion gallons a day and with the lake level over 15 feet, it should continue through July. South in the inlet, live-baiting for catch and release snook, jack crevalle and tarpon have most anglers attention.

The trout bite has been best early around Joe's Point and also spoil islands just east of the main channel on the Indian River. DOA glo and rootbeer shrimp along with live shrimp on bobbers have been best. Scattered jacks and ladyfish are also mixed in.

Structure fishing remains good with a mixed bag of tripletail, flounder, black drum, sheepshead and lane-mutton-mangrove snapper. Our last trip I got to fish with the Timmons Family. We targeted structures from Nettles Island to just north of the power plant. Youngsters Lily and Matt hooked up with sheepshead over four pounds and lots of small snappers. Earlier in the week, a few tripletail, flounder and black drum to ten pounds were caught.

Been hoping to get outside to the sand pile area and do a little live-baiting but I try to keep these trips to a 3-4 person max. Maybe next week I'll give it a shot.
