More afternoon redfish on fly

Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The afternoon lows have provided some great tailing redfish action. Although the tides were not real low last week, the steady north wind made them lower than predicted. I find when the tide is at a 0.5 or lower, the redfish must leave the flat. When the tide begins to come in, the redfish ride it on to the grass flat. The result is them tailing or pushing wakes as they feed. Generally the schools of fish have not been spooky. They push along and stop to tail, as they dig up little tasty treats from the grass.
When presenting a fly or lure, I like to lead the school if possible. If they don't find it on the first cast, my next one will be right in the middle of them. Most of them are to preoccupied by feeding, and won't notice the splat of a bait. I use small crab imitations with bead chain eyes when fly fishing. When spin fishing I will use a D.O.A, C.A.L. in Gold Rush. I like to put it on an off-set/wide gap hook with a D.O.A pinch weight.
The tides are starting to get lower and lower in the AM. This will provide some more great fly fishing for reds in the next few months. For best tides and saltwater fly fishing advice, please feel free to contact me. I enjoy guiding expert fly anglers as well as novice fly anglers willing to learn the sport.
