Cold Water. Tough Bite.

Capt. Stewart Ames
December 30, 2022
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Last week may have represented the worst cold this area has seen since the 2010 snook kill. On a charter yesterday, 2 dead trout, one dead snook and a dead ladyfish were all spotted laying on the bottom. A few seatrout were seem swimming off slowly as the boat approached and only 4 decent sized trout were hooked on the trip. The good news…water temps were 54 degrees yesterday, 58 today and, with forecasts for the next week showing daytime highs in the seventies, our normal and excellent winter trout fishing should resume. Swim tail jigs and select shrimp are the name of the game for bait until water temperatures rise enough to allow white bait to return.

Fish the moving tides, the warmer days and pre cold front conditions. If another hard cold front comes through, expect these fish to go into lock jaw mode again. Usually 2 - 3 days after a front, a good bite returns. As the last cold morning was Wednesday, these big gator trout that St Joseph's sound is know for should be back on the prowl towards the end of this weekend.

Good luck and good fishing.
