Drags are Singing and Rods are Bending in Tampa Bay

Capt. John Rivers
May 7, 2018
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Drags are singing, and Rods are bending in Tampa Bay! The water temps are right, and the inshore bite has fired off in Tampa Bay and in St. Joseph Sound around Clearwater Beach. Snook fishing has been off the charts these past three weeks. The Snook are starting to make their way to the gulf to start their annual spawn. May is one of the best months to catch big snook, both in Tampa Bay and along the beaches of St. Petersburg and Clearwater.

Both live bait and artificials will work, and while you're out in the gulf, have a rod rigged and ready for Tarpon, because they've showed up and it's only going to get better for the silver kings. I have some spots that I've been fishing in Tampa Bay that are holding some nice schools of big redfish and nothing is more fun than catching a 35"+ redfish in 3ft of water. A lot of Cobia have made their way into Tampa Bay, so you know I'll be checking the markers while I'm on a trip and have a rod rigged and ready for the Brown Clown!

Spanish Mackerel as well as King Mackerel are in thick as well in the bay and along the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and around Ft. Desoto. The Tarpon are also here in good numbers at the Skyway. Live and cut threadfin are your best bait choices for targeting them. As you may have guessed, May is one of my favorite times to fish the Tampa Bay area because there is a plethora of fish to target. You can go fish the flats for a while for snook and reds, then head out to deeper water in the bay and target Spanish or Kings or even go to the Tarpon areas and see if you can jump a silver king. I've run some great Tampa Bay inshore flats trips these past two weeks; with snook bending the rods and nice big bull reds making the Shimano Stradics sing, there have been many smiling faces aboard the Triton! May is a great month to fish Tampa Bay; I'm booking trips and have a few days left open. If you're a beginner or avid angler, and you're looking for fun day on the water with a veteran inshore guide of 15 years, you've come to the right place.
