Fall Fishing In Tampa Bay

Capt. Sean Hagen
November 18, 2009
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Despite a slow start, Sean Rice (of O' Brien's Fishing Club) and myself managed to have a pretty good day of fishing.

Our destination: the creeks of upper Tampa Bay. Our goal: redfish, snook, and trout. The redfish and snook evaded us. The trout on the other hand weren't so lucky. Big white
baits, freelined in 4-6ft of water, worked their magic producing 20-25" speckled trout.

A negative .4 tide limited accessibility to prime fishing spots but did not deture Capt. Rick Lyles of Reel Simple Charters and O' Brien's Fishing Club. He reported good action in a nearly land locked creek North of the Courtney Campbell Causeway. Capt. Rick's clients boated numerous redfish, snook, and trout with the highlight of the day being a 31.5" linesider.

Still on the hunt for redfish and snook, Sean and I didn't kill the motor until we reached the Weedon Island area where we managed to catch a keeper size snook and a jack on cut ladyfish before the tide went slack.

Our next move was to set up on the outgoing tide North of the "Mudhole." About ten minutes into the outgoing Sean got a snook, next cast a red, then a trout and so on. Freelining live sardines out from the mangroves was the ticket. A few bat fulls of live chum and a strong tide were key. It was dark when we left them biting.

Till next time have a safe and quality day on the water.
