Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Inshore and nearshore fisherman look forward to the arrival of April every year as this is typically the month when fishing really takes off. Larger seatrout are still available in St Joseph's sound, which is a little surprising as they have usually headed to the beach by now. Live pilchards are the bait of choice. Redfishing has been hot and cold over the lest 2 - 3 weeks. Fishing seemed to be picking up but then, during the last good moon phase, fish became a little scarce. A cold front did roll in which may have triggered this change in behavior. The good news is that this situation is unlikely to last for long as April, May and June are typically months with excellent redfishing. Just about any bait will work for these fish, but live pinfish, pilchards, and a variety of cut baits …ladyfish, pinfish, grunts and mullet…all produce excellent results.
Snook are making an appearance on every charter now. Some days it's one or two, on others it's a half dozen. Most are from 20 to 27 inches, but a legal fish fish shows up about every other trip and and large fish was landed a few charters ago. Many larger fish are starting to be seen and it won't be long before the big bruisers show in large numbers and start populating their typical beach hang outs. Fishing will only get better and better over the coming month. Good luck and good fishing.
