Southshore Tampa Bay Fishing Report
November 25, 2003
Fishing continues to be surprisingly good on the Southshore of Tampa Bay, though the Cobia run has been spotty at best. This is probably due to the unseasonably warm weather of late November. What’s wanted to push the cobia into the power plant is a front accompanied by some prolonged cold weather. My guess is that most of the cobia will have already migrated out of the bay when that happens. I have caught a few cobia, but I’m not seeing them in any numbers.
Henry Waschek was in town filming his cable TV show, fishing with Power Pole inventor John Oliverio. They landed and released two cobia, the biggest weighing 37 pounds. They also caught some snook, a redfish, and a big jack crevalle in the Little Manatee River.
The redfish bite has been pretty steady, but many of the fish have been short. In fact I have never seen this many rat reds on the flats, and that has to be a good thing. On a three hour trip yesterday, clients put two keeper reds in the boat along with a couple of shorts, and we also missed a couple of big snook.
Bait continues to be plentiful throughout the bay, and it is perfect size. However it is mixed with huge schools of glass minnows that are big enough to gill my quarter inch net. Last time I threw the small mesh net it took me an hour to pick out the glass minnows.
The grouper bite has started to heat up. We saw several keepers on the dock Sunday. They came off the Bahia Beach reef.
The snook bite has turned up a notch. Randy Bitter of Leesburg brought a 28 inch snook back to the dock that he caught while pitching artificials to the mangroves. He said he got broke off a couple of times by good fish.
Don’t forget the First Annual Pearl Harbor Day Jack Attack on Sunday December 07. We still have plenty of rods available. Entry fee is $25 and includes a new rod and reel (yours to keep). Call Shell Point Bait and Tackle for information at (813) 641 3662, or email me at [email protected].
