Southshore Tampa Bay Fishing Report
Shell Point Bait and Tackle Fishing Report December 02
The last cold front on Saturday finally pushed some cobia into the Big Bend powerplant in Apollo Beach along with an uncountable number of bonnethead sharks. I was there yesterday with my fishing buddy Keli Emery, and we were both amazed at the number of sharks prowling the sandy bottom north of the inlet. We also saw one cobia, but missed our shot at it. The we tried a couple of Keli’s tripletail spots but it was so windy and the outgoing current was so strong we couldn’t get the anchor to hold. We finally gave up on the tripletail, then went on to a nearby flat to look for cobia. After about half an hour we found a couple, and put a plastic eel in front of one. The cobia hit the eel on the run and then burned out about 60 yards line before Keli managed to turn his head. When the fish came to the boat after a long battle I had the gaff ready, but the size of the fish was too close to call. I tried to grab the leader but the fish gave a sharp jerk of the head and broke off.. I would have liked to put him in the boat for a photograph, but it was not a sure thing it would measure 33 inches to the fork. That and I just had a cobia smoked last week, and that will last me a while, so there was no sense of loss or disappointment with this fish.
I also did a little wade fishing on Sunday afternoon with Vic Stephens and Billy Jordan. The tide was extremely low at 2:30 in the afternoon and I hoped to spot some tailing redfish. The water temperature was less than 65 degrees and that will be the last wadefishing I do until I get a pair of waders. Billy had the good sense to stay on the boat. We did find some redfish, and I had one fish hit a Capt. Mike’s white spoon. I had it on for a second but it came right off. Several other fish chased RipTide jerk baits, but nothing else hit, and I didn’t see any snook. I had several shots at tailers, but no strikes.
Capt. Chet Jennings just got in from a trip this morning and his clients said they probably caught 30 fish between them – a mixed bag of redfish, snook and trout.
We still have a couple of rods left for the First Annual Jack Attack Tournament on December 07. Captain’s meeting is at 11:00 am and the tournament hours are noon to 5:00 pm. Call the shop (813) 641-3662 for more information.
