Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Afternoon fishing was a bit testy this week with thunderstorms cavorting around Southshore Tampa Bay. I tried several times to get out late in the afternoon to fish the strong falling tide for snook at the mouth of the Little Manatee River, but high wind and lightning kept the boat in the lift. I am seeing quite a few snook hanging around the docks when the tide starts to fall, and caught a few small fish early in the morning with my fly rod, but I haven’t been able to score on any of the big fish I’ve been seeing. I believe they could be had with a surface plug around sunset, but the iffy weather has thus far precluded an attempt.
Early morning fishing offered better opportunities, but the results were the same. I saw some mackerel just off the Bahia Beach reef while looking for cobia earlier this week. Capt. Chet Jennings said he targeted them one day midweek, but only caught eight fish. I guess we are in the doldrums.
Capt. Larry Malinoski told me he tried trolling jigs on number two planers for grouper around Port Manatee earlier this week. The first two hours didn’t produce a strike, but he finally found some fish and put nine in the boat in very quick order. All were shorts, however.
Keli Emery had better luck fishing inshore, catching redfish and trout in Little Cockroach Bay fishing with cut threadfins. She said the bait was somewhat easier to put in net since the water clarity deteriorated.
Rain has dropped the water temperature back into the high 80’s, where a week ago it was 93 degrees. It will come right back up and put a crimp in inshore activity for the next couple of months. Early morning and late afternoon will be the best time to be on the water through the end of September.
