Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Another week of hot weather and not so hot fishing on Southshore Tampa Bay, particularly early in the week. Low tides in the early afternoon mystify me, and coupled with the boat traffic from the Labor Day holiday, our fishing was worse than slow through Wednesday.
Early morning to mid day fishing continues to be a struggle. I fished Little Cockroach Bay on Tuesday with two friends from Vermont targeting redfish with chunks of ladyfish, and frozen threadfin herring, but the bite was nonexistent. We didn’t even catch a catfish.
From there we went south to Piney Point looking to net some sardines. Most of the whitebait we found there was too small to fish with, but there were plenty of perfect sized pinfish. I poled all over that flat from the ferry landing to Piney Creek without seeing a redfish or a snook.
Later that same day we anchored at the mouth of the Little Manatee River and caught a couple of ladyfish and a jack crevalle on live pinfish.
Things finally began to get a little better on Friday. I waded the flats south of Sand Key on a low tide at sunset with John Arico of Arcadia and Ed Childers of Ruskin after a brief afternoon thunderstorm. The water was cooler than usual, probably due to the rain, but still choked with weeds. I caught two short snook and two slot sized trout on RipTide’s flats chubs. John missed a big redfish, and Ed said he cast at some tailing redfish but couldn’t get them to take, but said he caught a couple of little trout.
