Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

There was mostly good news for Southshore anglers this week. I ran into Capt. Mark Thomas as he picked up clients at Simmons Park and he told me he was catching big Spanish mackerel, trout, and redfish south of the Port Manatee Spoil Island on live bait. He said that bait was plentiful on the flats north of the Cockroach Bay boat ramp, but there was still a lot of small stuff mixed in with it.
Keli Emery stopped by my place on the Little Manatee River to show off a beautiful pair of 10-pound tripletail she and her sister caught under channel buoys off Apollo Beach. She said they put two fish in the boat and hooked two more on live shrimp before getting blown off the water Thursday afternoon. Keli said the redfish bite has been so hot, she’s almost tired of catching them. She was headed upriver to try for some snook.
Capt. Larry Malinoski reported great action on grouper last Tuesday. He put four gags in the box, and released another eight keepers trolling deep diving plugs and jigs on planers inside the Skyway. The following day he hooked nine grouper, but all were short. He said that the tide moved better the day before.
Capt. Chet Jennings tells me that October fishing has really been much better than it was last month. He said he’s finding snook and redfish in the holes around Cockroach Bay and Bishop Harbor. The redfish bite has been consistent, with a number of oversized fish.
I’m still not hearing much about cobia, but they should be on the flats any day. Now through November is a good time to look for the big fish in the shallows in front of the Kitchen, and on the flats south of Apollo Beach.
