Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wind, rain, and mid day low tides made for difficult fishing this week, and traffic on the bay was minimal. Nevertheless, I put my boat in the water Tuesday and took a short bumpy ride to the sand bar in front of Mag’s Hole on – about a mile from the dock at the mouth of the Little Manatee River. The wind was blowing out of the north at a good 10 to 15 knots and the tide was ripping out.
Skies were overcast and it was drizzling rain, but with a rain jacket and chest waders I was dry and comfortable.Shortly after I went over the side, a pod of snook erupted in a foot of water within casting distance. I threw the snook fly downwind, and hooked up instantly with a 24 inch fish. Minutes later I hooked an even bigger fish that threw the hook a few minutes later. I hooked and lost another snook on the next cast, and then they simply quit. But hooking three snook on a fly rod is certainly worth the price of admission, and you can’t catch ‘em sitting on the couch.
Looks like the wind is with us for a while, and that means fishing the rivers and the backcountry to get out of it. The Little Manatee River is full of snook just now, and there is some bait on the local flats, but the water is so murky it’s impossible to see it. Devils Elbow and the railroad trestle are hot spots, but expect plenty of company, especially on the weekends.
The tides slowed up toward the weekend, and we fished cut bait around the mangrove shoreline in Little Cockroach Bay, but the bite was slow. Water clarity was poor.
